It is also famous for its large areas of lush tropical forest and cascading waterfalls. Its striking landscape is overlooked by the Akwapim ridge and the Krobo mountains. It is also home to the only commercial diamond mine at Akwatia.
Places of interest in the region:
- Aburi Botanical Gardens (This garden is a century old and attracts over 5000 visitors monthly. It is famous for its collection of 375 different plant species, colourful butterflies and tranquil walkways. It’s a bird watcher’s paradise.
- Aburi craft village: craftmen can be seen at work on magnificent carvings and drums which are available for purchase. You can actually get some great bargains here.
- Okomfo Anokye Shrine, Awukugua: This shrine is dedicated to the founder of the powerful Ashanti Empire during the 17th & 18th century.
- Tetteh Quashie cocoa farm: The first cocoa farm to be established in the country.This crop became the number one foreign exchange earner for Ghana.
- Boti Falls: Spectacular but seasonal, it provides cascades surrounded by attractive woodlands and forest which are ideal for picnics and holidaying.
